Health & Wellness Trendsetters: Interview with Maria Guerra

Health & Wellness Trendsetters are leading the way in helping people live healthier, happier lives by learning how to deal with stress, and changing their eating and exercise habits so that they can maintain a healthy weight and keep their bodies moving.

Maria Guerra is a prime example of a health & wellness trendsetter. She has been a successful group fitness instructor for many years, having undergone her own dramatic weight-loss and understanding full well what that journey entails. She started her fitness career by teaching kickboxing and cardio salsa for various local gyms in Orange County.

Throughout the years, she has also taught club boxing, boot camp, Zumba, kettlebell training, weight training, indoor cycling, yoga and Pilates. She has since created her own High Intensity Fitness Program, BURN™.
Hard Core Fitness Studio is the culmination of Maria’s experience and passion for fitness and empowerment through exercise. The studio offers a wide variety of classes, ranging from BURN, to Kids Zumba, to Jam Session Cycling.

Hard Core Fitness prides itself on providing a welcoming, non-intimidating environment with the goal of inspiring its clients to fitness and overall wellness by providing challenging programs. The studio’s clever motto is “This Ain’t Your Mama’s Gym.”

Health & Wellness Trendsetters:  Interview with Maria Guerra

1. What is your background?

I grew up in Southern California but have also lived in Arizona and Maui. I’m first-generation US born with parents from Puerto Rica and Mexico. I was not very athletic growing up. Actually, the opposite was true. I was sickly and underweight. This background made it much more difficult to deal with the huge weight gain I underwent with each of my pregnancies, leaving me 100 pounds overweight!

2. What inspired/motivated you to get into the health and wellness field?

Having undergone my own weight issues and experiencing first-hand the sometimes unscrupulous business of the weight loss industry, I knew I could do better. I feel very strongly that adopting lifestyle changes rooted in self-love is the most effective way to reach realistic health & fitness goals.

3. What is most rewarding to you about your profession?

I am humbled everyday by my students’ trust in me to help them in their journey. I am honored to have the opportunity to push them beyond their self-imposed limits. But my biggest victories are not when my clients lose weight, but rather when they report how their self-esteem has improved, how their blood pressure and cholesterol readings have decreased, and that their quality of life has improved. There is no greater feeling than knowing I had something to do with someone else’s understanding of their own greatness.

4. As a health & wellness trendsetter, what do you predict will be the next big trend in your industry?

I believe multimedia channels will continue to develop to the point that various groups in different cities will be able to work out together simultaneously.

5. What tips/advice would you give for someone trying to achieve optimal health?

My advice is to start with realistic short-term goals and adopt practices that you can incorporate into a permanent lifestyle.

6. What is your favorite healthy meal?

My favorite healthy meal is the Sante Fe Chicken Salad with cilantro-lime dressing and a quinoa side served at Healthyca Restaurant in North Hollywood on Lankershim Boulevard. Any time I’m in Los Angeles, I make sure to stop there for lunch!
