Second Session with my Wellness Coach

I had my second meeting with Lorie today and we reviewed how my first week went.  I’d say it went pretty well, considering it was the Christmas Holiday. I’d hit two of my three goals at about 90%! From the Coach: Helane made great progress in changing her eating habits. She’s starting to eat breakfast daily, incorporating veggies into her meals, and cooking more.

Exercise was my tough one, which admittedly I didn’t meet since I was a bit lazy.  As we talked some more about my goals for the following week we discussed different things to make meeting my goals a bit easier. 

One thing I really took away from our second meeting is nothing is set in stone, the options are flexible and it’s about meeting small milestones to change the habits.  This is a far departure from my normal jump in head first – no substitutions allowed approach, and it actually feels really good.  I feel like I’ve given myself permission to enjoy the process but still have my goals front of mind.  From the Coach: Experiment and don’t deprive yourself. After all, this is a lifestyle. It needs to be  enjoyable.

One week of vacation and holidays left–a little more fudge, a lot more veggies, and for sure more exercise 😉

Keep on Movin’

Today is Day #12 of my twelve week program and I’m feeling pretty energized and excited about my momentum.  I have to say that with the holidays, so many friends visiting, and so many “food” activities, it’s been nice to just enjoy what I want but still have my goals in mind.  From the Coach: There’s no reason not to indulge a little over the holidays. Don’t be a scrooge; just don’t eat everything in sight.

Round two of shopping almost launched me in to my normal nature to do too much and overwhelm myself.  What do I mean by this? Well my goal this week was to try five new recipes – so of course the overachiever in me found like 10 new recipes and when I got to the store with list in hand for the five I had chosen I started adding in other items not on my list and then got super tired thinking about all of the other recipes I thought I was going to try.  From the Coach: I’m not surprised, but pleased that Helane reined herself in.

It dawned on me that my goal was five; I needed to keep it attainable and enjoy the process.  So I scaled back, focused on my five items and started getting excited about cooking.  A friend saw my shopping cart and was like “Wow, what are you making?” I was happy to share all of the new recipe ideas I was going to try. Passing on the love.  This week I’m going to make:

  • Peanut Butter Protein Muffins,
  • Gingerbread Quinoa Breakfast Cookies,
  • Spicy Black Bean Burgers,
  • Vegan Alfredo Pasta w/Chicken (did I mention I had chicken for the first time in six years…it was yummy!), and
  • Split pea soup.

It’s off to the races!!

Trying New Things

I’m still figuring out how best to have meals prepared for myself. Should I cook all one day or should I cook throughout the week (I do have the luxury of working from home)? I’m trying to decide what is best. As I’m trying my new recipes I find that I’m enjoying cooking a little bit each day, but right now I’m off from work. From the Coach: Lifestyle change requires some trial and error before discovering what works best. That’s OK. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the journey.

Today as I am looking for more “protein” for breakfast I tried Peanut Butter Protein Muffins (click for recipe). I substituted date paste that I made for brown sugar to make them a bit healthier and I must say YUMMMM! I’m super excited to have an alternative breakfast item that’s packed with protein and easy to grab.

I also kicked off the New Year with a hike.  Last week my brother asked me if I wanted to go on a hike and I said sure. It was about 45min-1hour locally and mostly flat with a few inclines.  So when he asked again today I said sure! Well let’s say 1.5 hours later after hiking a canyon I have to say I was quite proud that I did it, a bit tired, and ready to keep on moving!  From the Coach: Helane is getting back in the exercise habit! The next challenge is to continue with these new patterns when Helane is back at work next week.
